How to measure AI share of voice without fooling yourself
BY DZAN VOLODER, FOUNDERLAST UPDATED 7 MIN READ
Measure AI share of voice with a fixed set of real buyer prompts, run the same way every month across the same assistants. Count how often each brand is named and cited. Changing prompts or cherry-picking screenshots makes the number meaningless.
Start with prompts your buyers actually ask
Write prompts with your sales team. Mix category, comparison, problem and local prompts. Avoid prompts that include your brand name unless you are tracking brand description.
Run each prompt more than once
Answers vary between runs, a lot. In SparkToro's 2026 study, nearly 3,000 runs of the same prompts produced the same list of brands less than 1 time in 100, and the same order less than 1 time in 1,000. The brands that kept reappearing were far more stable than any single answer.
Running each prompt 3 times and counting a brand as named if it appears in at least 2 runs gives a steadier number. Track how often you are named, not your position in one answer.
Report named and cited separately
Being named in the answer and being linked as a source are different outcomes. Report both, by assistant.
Put it next to leads and pipeline
AI share of voice is a leading indicator. Show it beside AI-referred visits, organic leads and pipeline so the business sees the full picture.
